"Paradise Lost"[title 1] is the ninth episode of ABC Family's Switched at Birth Season One and the series overall. It was written by Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux, and it was directed by Ron Lagomarsino. It was originally aired on August 1st, 2011.
Plot[]
It’s Bay and Daphne’s birthday week and a lot is going on. First, Daphne has a jarring dream in which she is hearing and Bay is deaf. Once she wakes up, the realization of the situation she’s in sinks in. Meanwhile, Melody kicks Regina out of her house where she’s been hiding from her daughters for a few days. And Kathryn and John look into getting custody of Daphne.
Regina unsuccessfully tries to reconnect with Daphne and Bay. An upset Daphne even gets in a fight on the basketball court. Emmett tries to help Bay tag a wall, but they are interrupted by the police. Melody discovers Emmett and Bay hanging out and isn't happy about it.
The day before their birthday, John and Kathryn buy Daphne and Bay both used cars. The Kennish family has a small birthday celebration for Daphne and Bay without Regina, but Regina barges in. Regina gives Daphne a birthday present and it helps break the ice between them.
Meanwhile, Emmett gives Daphne a thoughtful present but gives Bay a scarf. It turns out Bay’s present isn't a scarf, it’s a blindfold! Emmett went back and tagged the wall for Bay. Bay and Emmett decide it’s time to tell Daphne about them. However, before Bay can tell Daphne that she’s dating Emmett, Daphne reveals that she thinks she’s into Emmett. Bay doesn't say anything about her and Emmett.

Daphne has a jarring dream in which she is hearing and Bay is deaf. Once she wakes up, the realization of the situation she’s in sinks in. Meanwhile, Melody kicks Regina out of her house where she’s been hiding from her daughters for a few days with instructions to patch things up with the girls. Kathryn and John look into the possibility of evicting Regina for her deception but are told they would not be able to legally bar her from taking Daphne along.
Neither of Regina's daughters are quite willing to make amends and Daphne even threatens to move in to the main house with the Kennishes. Adrianna scolds her granddaughter for her disrespect, and although she is hurt that Regina kept her in the dark she admits to having suspicions all along and agrees to support her daughter.
An upset Daphne even gets in a fight on the basketball court which is broken up by John and Melody. Emmett tries to help Bay fulfill her birthday wish of getting her art on a blank billboard. Melody discovers Emmett and Bay hanging out and isn’t happy about it.
The day before their birthday, John and Kathryn Kennish buy Daphne and Bay both used cars. The Kennish family has a small birthday celebration for Daphne and Bay without Regina, but Regina barges in saying she never missed one of Daphne's birthdays and didn't plan on missing another of Bay's. John is very vocally against her inclusion but Bay and Toby manage to talk him down. Bay tells John she wants her(Regina) here.
They all toast the girls' sweet sixteen and Emmett (who is attending the party with Melody) gives Daphne a signed movie poster but gives Bay a scarf/blindfold for her surprise "real gift". It turns out Emmett went back and tagged the billboard for Bay. Bay and Emmett decide it’s time to tell Daphne about them. However, before Bay can tell Daphne that she’s dating Emmett, Daphne reveals that she thinks she’s into Emmett, before asking Bay what she came in to tell her. Bay chickens out and lamely wishes her a happy birthday which Daphne returns.
Between all this, Bay and Emmett want to come out to their friends and family, but Emmett's mother said she wouldn't approve of them dating due to Bay's limited signing. Emmett then reveals that he wants to take speech therapy so he can talk.
