ABC Family, which will change its name to Freeform in January 2016, announced on Wednesday October 21, 2015, that it has renewed the long-running drama for a fifth season.[1]
The one-hour scripted drama revolves around two young women who discover they were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments.[2] While balancing school, jobs, and their unconventional family, the girls, along with their friends and family, experience Deaf culture, relationships, class differences, racism, audism, and other social issues.
ABC Family announced on October 21, 2015 that it has renewed the long-running drama for a fifth and final season which are set to air on Freeform.[3][4] On March 19, 2016, it was announced that the fifth season was bumped to a 2017 premiere date.[5]
Later, the date is pushed toward to January 31st, 2017, instead of the 24th.[6]

Daphne and Bay are so enthralled with China that they stay longer than anticipated, but after 10 months, they get an emergency call and drop everything to return home. Once there, Daphne tries to integrate herself back into campus life but finds that things have changed without her. Bay is mixed up about her feelings towards Emmett who is struggling with his own problems. Meanwhile, Kathryn and John quarrel over her job and Regina feels guilty about a secret tryst.

Iris pledges to continue her hunger strike until the students responsible for a racist display are expelled. Sharee faces the pain of her own past while trying to get more students to get involved. Chris is torn between wanting to impress several baseball scouts at a game or standing with his fellow students to show solidarity.

Kathryn becomes nostalgic when five years have passed since the two families started living together. Regina announces she's moving out in order to be with Eric. Kathryn discovers that John ordered a DNA test before they found out about the Switch. Daphne is told by Dr. Bannon she doesn't qualify for his internship because she's deaf. Bay is celebrated for her tattoo work in a magazine spread, but her struggle to prove herself to John who then let's it slip about Travis' offer. Toby meets Nina who changes his perception about Carlton's future. Daphne and Mingo reconcile. Melody helps Natalie in help finding Matthew. Bay tells Travis that Emmett will be going to Japan with him and she'll be here when he comes back. Regina tells Eric to turn himself in and will take care of Will until he gets out of prison. The series ends with everyone laying on the front lawn waiting for the comet to pass over the house.
